You make more in the REP than the other metropolitan regiments, although I can’t speak for the overseas regiments. This became glaringly obvious while I was taking a radio course at Castel as a first class légionnaire with two year’s service under my belt. We were paid a little over 6,000 francs a month, but a fellow course member from the 2e REI was given four measly 500 franc notes for the month. What really demonstrated the disparity in wages was the fact that we received slightly more as first class légionnaires with the REP than a sergent did with the 4e RE. A caporal in the REP will make around 8,800 francs each month, which can almost double for a four month tour in Africa. A sergent on tour in Africa can make well in excess of 20,000 francs per month.

The partial pay stub below shows what I received as a caporal in the REP for June 1994 while on a tour of Chad. My total pay for the month in cash was 16,426.83 francs.
